Voluntourism and Cruising  March 2016


Nancy Schretter, Together for Good's Founder, is featured in a session entitled "Shorex and the Rise of Voluntourism" at Seatrade Global 2016, the cruise industry’s premier conference. This session covers how cruise lines and others are catering to travelers' interests in combining volunteer opportunities with leisure travel and ways ports can adapt and cater to this voluntourism trend.
Presenters include Tara Russell, President of Fathom & Global Impact Lead, Carnival Corporation & Plc; Daniel Skjeldam, CEO, Hurtigruten; John Stoll, Vice President, Land Programs, Crystal Cruises; and Yoshioka Tatsuya, Founder and Director, Peace Boat.

La Clinica Esperanza is a local low cost/no cost medical clinic in Sandy Bay, Roatan. Office supplies and medical supplies are needed for the operation of the medical clinic. These include over the counter children's medications, over the counter adult medications, cough and cold medications, aspirin, adult multivitamins, children's multivitamins, and a wide variety of office supplies including scotch tape, masking tape, glue sticks, pens, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, paper clips, permanent markers, staples, envelopes, Post-It Notes, sharpies and more. Arnaldo Auld Public School in Gravel Bay is a small kindergarten through 6th grade school located in Constelation Bight, very near one of Roatan's cruise piers. Over 600 children attend this school in morning and afternoon sessions. The school needs English language reading books, pencils, backpacks, crayons, construction paper, composition notebooks, copy paper, vitamins, new or gently used children's clothes, black shoes and white socks for both boys and girls and white board erasers. A list of what is currently needed can be found on the Roatan Children's Fund website at RoatanChildrensFund.com. School supplies may be dropped off during school hours from February through November.

Elfrida Brooks School in Coxen Hole is located near one of Roatan's cruise ship piers. The school has approximately 180 students in grades K-6, housed in three classrooms. The school needs Band-aids, cotton balls, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bars of soap, band instruments, crayons, pencils, backpacks, erasers, coloring books, Spanish-English dictionaries, black shoes and white socks for boys and girls in grades K-6, new or gently used children's clothing, children's vitamins and more. Froylan Turcios School is located in First Bight on Roatan. The school has 120 students in grades K-6, housed in four classrooms. The school desperately needs pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, backpacks, construction paper, lined binder paper, composition notebooks, crayons, washable markers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soap, dental floss, first aid kit items, English to Spanish dictionaries, and white socks for grades K-6. Greenfield Children’s Home is located in Sandy Bay, between Coxen Hole and Roatan’s West End area. The children’s home, part of Sandy Bay Lighthouse Ministries, is home to over twenty children as well as the Beacon Academy school building. Information on Greenfield Children’s Home can be found at https://sblmroatan.net. A current supplies list is provided on the website as well. Donations of groceries which can easily be purchased on the island are warmly welcomed as well. Those interested in visiting should contact the home well in advance to arrange a mutually convenient time. A contact form is available on the website or you can email them at info@sblmroatan.net.

Mission Roatan is an organization that has been active in working with and supporting the people of Roatan. If you’re interested in arranging a group project, mission trip, or a day of volunteering/service while on a cruise or land-based vacation, you may wish to contact Mission Roatan at gruner@missionroatan.org.

Pedro Nufio School is located in Politilly Bight on Roatan. The school needs crayons, pencils, pencil sharpeners, backpacks, erasers, coloring books, shoes and white socks for boys and girls in grades K-6, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soap, children's vitamins, children's books in English and Spanish, composition notebooks, new or gently used children's clothing, and Spanish-English dictionaries. Partners in Education – Roatan (PIER) is a US 501c3 nonprofit organization that encourages education on the island of Roatan. The organization operates a library and Teachers Resource Center, a bookmobile service and much more. The organization needs over 30,000 books to support the children in their programs and welcomes volunteers to help them carry out their mission. They also need school supplies, backpacks, arts & crafts materials, games and puzzles. Specific needs include pencils, markers, paper, Spanish children's books, glue sticks, crayons, markers, books of games and activities in English and Spanish, tape and scissors.
